Cryogenic Propellant Explosive Testing

Cryogenic Oxygen and Methane Explosive Testing (COMET)

Objective: Establish safety standards for LOX/LNG fueled Launch Vehicles by characterizing blast parameters of explosions in an accident scenario. The test series addresses static siting and aspects of `T+0 and less’ ground accident environments.

Failure mode: Vented tank rupture and mixing with splashing on ground

Variables: L/D, weight of propellant, and ignition delay time

Timeline: 2018-2020
